Sunday, March 18, 2007 : Round 26 sees Olympiakos edge closer to the Super League title

Super League leaders Olympiakos Piraeus were held to a goalless draw on Sunday as arch-rivals Panathinaikos slumped to their second successive league defeat.

With just four rounds to go in the Super League, Olympiakos remain eight points clear of AEK Athens at the top of the table and are now just four points shy of posting their ninth domestic league title in ten years.

AEK, who beat Kerkyra 1-0, now hold a four-point lead over Panathinaikos in the race for the runners-up spot which holds a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Olympiakos were strangely muted in their game against Aris and might easily have lost. Rivaldo prouduced one fine effort which was turned wide by Costas Chalkias.

For Aris, the point is a valuable one in their bid to qualify for the UEFA Cup. They are now in fifth place, two points behind PAOK, who beat Ionikos 2-0, and one more than Panionios who were held to a 1-1 draw by Xanthi.

AEK’s game in Corfu was settled early when Pantelis Kapetanos scored in the first minute of the game.

The shock of the weekend was reserved for the Olympic Stadium, however, when for the second week running Panathinaikos lost at home to a mid-table side. Last week it was Ergotelis, this week Atromitos.

Panathinaiikos, who appeared to be turning the corner in terms of form this season when they beat Olympiakos in Piraeus two weeks ago, went behind in the 32nd minute after a good finish by Christos Koutsospiros.

The visitors, who put up stubborn resistance against Sevilla in the UEFA Cup earlier in the season, doubled the score through a Marcelo Oliveira header in the 66th minute.

Dimitris Papadopoulos pulled back four minutes later but Panathinaikos were unable to find another goal.

At the bottom of the table, Apollon Kalamaria produced an important win over Ergotelis which lifts them out of the bottom three while Iraklis bought themselves a bit more time with a 1-0 win over Larissa.

Results round 26: Egaleo 1 OFI Crete 2, Ergotelis 0 Apollon Kalamaria 1, Ionikos 0 PAOK Salonika 2, Iraklis 1 Larissa 0, Kerkyra 0 AEK Athens 1, Olympiakos 0 Aris Salonika 0, Panathinaikos 1 Atromitos 2Xanthi 1 Panionios 1
