Tuesday, June 12, 2007 : Goalkeeper extends Olympiakos contract for one year

Antonis NikopolidisOlympiakos goalkeeper Antonis Nikopolidis has extended his contract with the Piraeus club for another season, it was announced on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old is expected to retire at the end of next season.

His career began when he joined Panathinaikos in 1989 at the age of 18 and he has since go on to captain his country and help the Greens as well as Olympiakos to league titles.

He was dropped as first-choice keeper for the national team following a poor performance in Greece's 4-1 home thrashing against Turkey in a Euro 2008 qualifier in March. Coach Otto Rehhagel kept the goalkeeper sidelined for a further two games before bringing him back for last week's 2-1 win against Moldova.

Olympiakos also agreed yesterday to take on former player Ilia Ivic as their technical director. Ivic held the same post at AEK until stepping down at the end of the season.
