Saturday, March 31, 2007 : Greece miss out on fifth spot in water polo

Croatia took gold in the men’s water polo beating Hungary 9-8 in extra-time after it finished all square 7-7 in normal time.

Greece ended in sixth spot after losing the fifth-placed classification match 15-16 to Italy in a penalty shoot-out.

Greece were outplayed for the early part of the match but forced extra time by scoring three late goals to level the match at 9-9. Both sides scored twice in extra-timer to make it 11-11 and send the game into penalties.

Christmas came early for the Italians when goalkeeper Stefano Tempesti blocked Greece’s final shot from Stefanos Santa to give them a 5-4 victory on penalties.
