Ilias IliadisGreece concluded on Sunday one of its most successful ever Mediterranean Games, collecting a total of 64 medals to finish fifth in the medals table in Pescara, Italy.

After an impressive five gold medals in rowing, four golds in track and field, two each in karate and gymnastics, Greece celebrated on Sunday its second gold medal in judo, as favourite Ilias Iliadis triumphed in the 90-kilogram category.

Iliadis, gold-medallist in the 2004 Olympics in Athens and Greece's flagbearer in the Beijing Olympics last summer, scored three rather easy wins at Pescara to show he is back in top form.

Vangelis Himonas gave Greece its only medal in sailing by finishing third in the Laser class.

In team sports the men's basketball saw Greece finish second as the national team lost to Croatia 72-60 in the final on Saturday. In water polo Greece was seventh, in football fifth, in women's volleyball fourth and in men's sixth.

Ioulieta BoukouvalaJudo champion Ioulieta Boukouvala added a gold Mediterranean Games gold medal to her rich collection in Pescara, Italy on Friday.

The Greek judoka defeated four opponents on the way to claiming the top spot on the podium at the -57 kilogram category.

Dimitra Androutsou won bronze in the -63 kilogram category, while Lavrentis Alexanidis narrowly missed out on a medal in the men's -66 kilogram category.

In gymnastics Vassiliki Millousi won gold in the balance beam with 14,725 points, while Evgenia Zafiraki was fourth in floor exercise.

There were two more medals for Greece in athletics on Friday, two days before the end of the Games, as Tonia Stergiou finished third in high-jump overcoming 1.89 metres and the national 4x400 metres relay team earned bronze. Tilemachos Routas, Dimitris Gravalos, Pantelis Melachrinoudis and Petros Kyriakidis clocked 3.06.29.

On Saturday the men's basketball team will face Croatia in the final after beating Turkey 82-79 in the semifinal.
