The first round of games for the new B' Ethniki championship had several unexpected results in store last weekend.

Promotion favourites OFI Crete suffered a 2-1 loss at Diagoras on Saturday in a game marred by turbulence at the visitors' stands.

Olympiakos Volou went down 3-1 to visiting Kerkyra in the opening game last Friday, although the hosts are also seen to be among the teams aspiring to go up to the Super League.

Ionikos also lost 1-0 at home to neighbours Ethnikos Piraeus on Sunday, while recently-promoted Panetolikos, coach by former Olympiakos player Sinisa Gogic, lost 2-0 at Pierikos on Monday.

Rodos, which replaced Apollon Kalamarias in late August as the Thessaloniki side went bankrupt, managed to hold Thrasyvoulos at 1-1 away. The Fyli club are one of the three teams which got relegated from the Super League last spring.

Another one of them, Panserraikos, also failed to win at home as Anagennisi Karditsas snarched a 1-1 away draw.

Veria and Kallithea are following Kastoria from the second to the third division as Atromitos were crowned B' Ethniki champions for the 2008-09 season.

In the last round of games on Monday the relegation of Kallithea was sealed early on as they went down 2-1 at Ilisiakos, but Veria fought until the last minute to avoid the second drop in as many seasons trailing at home to fellow strugglers Anagennisi Karditsas.

Eventually Anagennisi won 1-0 at Veria and stayed up, with the home fans calling for the Veria owner to sell his stake and go.

Atromitos had a huge party to celebrate finishing first in the standings and bouncing back to the Super League after just one season in B' Ethniki.

The Peristeri side downed Ethnikos 2-1 and then 3,000 fans enjoyed their team lifting the trophy and regaining their top flight status.

Also going up to the Super League are PAS Yiannina and Kavala.

Doxa Dramas and Ilioupolis are promoted from the third to the second division, while the third team to go up will be determined by a play-off between Rodos and Panetolikos on Saturday, May 23.
