EuroleagueMaroussi's hopes of making the Euroleague play-offs were dashed by Panathinaikos on Thursday night as the Greens beat their Athens rivals 82-79 to end their impressive European campaign.

Maroussi had been hoping to beat Panathinaikos and for Partizan to lose. Although the Serbs were beaten 82-64 by Barcelona, the Yellows were not able too keep up their own end of the bargain.

As the score suggests, it was a tight game at the OAKA indoor arena. PAO led 41-39 at half-time and driven on by Mike Batiste, who scored 21 points, the Greens held on for a win that means they finished in third place in Group E.

Maroussi had to settle for last spot as Partizan took second behind group winners Barcelona.

In the night's other game, Olymiakos lost 96-83 to BC Khimki but had already secured top spot in Group G.

Caja Laboral also made it through from the Reds' group. They will be joined in the play-offs by Maccabi, Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow and Prokom.

The five-game quarterfinals, starting on March 23rd, will be as follows:

Panellinios and Aris will face Spanish opposition in the quarterfinals of the Eurocup without home advantage, as Tuesday's results meant they both finished second in their groups.

Panellinios will host Gran Canaria and Aris will entertain Valencia on March 24, with the return legs in Spain on March 31.

On Tuesday Panellinios defeated Bilbao (coached by Greek Fotis Katsikaris) 77-70 in Athens, but had needed a difference of 21 points to finish top of the group.

Aris lost 79-75 at Le Mans to end up second in their pool, although they had led the French side for a long time on the night.
