Gordon Mayforth, coming to GreeceThe Hellenic Volleyball federation is to decide on Monday whether to approve or not the appointment of US coach Gordon Mayforth as the man to lead the men's national team.

Mayforth has reached an agreement with federation president Stelios Prosalikas, and made his first statements after the publication of his name as the candidate for Greece.

"I have agreed with the heads of the Greek federation and I am waiting on Monday for my hiring to get approved," said the coach who has decided to leave Japanese side Hiroshima this spring to work in Greece.

"For me, Greece is a challenge as it has the need to return to the top teams in Europe. National teams are above club contracts, they are more important for me. They have a special weight and a greater significance," said Mayforth.

He admitted he knows very little about the Greek players and that he is coming to Greece in mid-April, once the Japanese playoffs are concluded.

Greece will have to overcome Finland, Latvia and one of Great Britain or Azerbaijan to qualify to the next European Championship.

The draw for the qualifying pools for the 2011 tournament was held on Saturday in Luxembourg and was rather kind to Greece.

The national team, that reached the second stage of the finals in the 2009 version of the tournament, will practically need to fend off the challenge of Finland, a strong and ever-improving side, in order to win the group and qualify directly to the 2011 finals.

The first half og the games will be held in Latvia and the second in Greece, at Iraklio in Crete.

If Greece finish second, they will have to negotiate a home-and-away play-off with the second team from the group consisting of fallen giants Italy, as well as Turkey, Belarus and one of Moldova and Romania.

The finals will be played on September 9-18, 2011 in Austria and the Czech Republic.

The women’s draw has pitted Greece with Bulgaria, Finland and Portugal.
